Klavierstück III
for solo prepared piano

Program note
To call this work a „Klavierstück” is both to recognize the piano as a vessel which may contain numerous fingerprints and references, and to question its parameters as a percussion instrument. In Partch’s Mazda Marimba there is already the idea of extended sounds being somehow embraced within a ‘Persian’-inspired percussion context. Here, the remapping and reimagining of manual gestures from the tombak change the physicality of ‘playing piano’, allowing for a new sonic world to emerge. Klavierstück III was commissioned by pianist Maryam Mehraban in the framework of her project „Piano at the Center of Cultural Exchange”.
