I just finished a new trio for soprano, guqin (古琴), and bass drum. Kendall A. graciously provided a new text for the work, which is a reinterpretation of the legend of Miao Shan. Soprano Jackie Stevens, percussionist Colleen Phelps, and I will give the premiere on October 3rd in Cincinnati.

Fragrant Mountain (2016)

In every weary step,
Flowers bloom,
But should I remain still,
My feet would turn to stone.

I grew gigantic,
My head above both rain
And clouds
So small,
I could swim in a single drop

Only finding
Meaning
In unbecoming either,
Or anything.

Peace lies in breath without breathing;
Wisdom in sight without seeing.

– Kendall A.
